This was an intensive 4-day Hackathon participated by Data Analyst, Digital Marketer and Product Manager by Innovate for Africa Fellow.
The prompt: Design a solution to the lack of centralized biometrics data to help with identity management. We delivered a working prototype and a pitch of the solution at the end.

Provided with an open-ended prompt, we identified the problem of inadequate identification management system for pupils end of school pick-up in Nigeria private primary schools
As a result, we came up with Pickie: A mobile-based pupils pick-up app that is designed to remind parents of their children’s school pick-up time and help Private Nursery and Primary schools seamlessly Identify the person a parent/ Guardian has sent to pick up their wards in cases they are not available.
Empathizing
We focused our effort on generative research on the first day of the hackathon: I participated in the brainstorm sessions on problem areas and after picking the direction, we interviewed 6 different primary school staff.
Key research insight: School staffs sometimes can’t reach parents to confirm the identity of the person who has come to pick up their wards.
Other Insights:
-
The inability to identify people who come to pick pupils at school dismissal keep school staff back in school later than intended
-
Regular occurrence of unidentified person coming to pick up pupils from the school
-
The schools do not have a structured system that identify pupils as they leave school premises after school dismissal.
We adopted the Attribute Listing Method in the ideation process, by thinking about the current alternatives our customer has to solve the problem we have identified.
Then, brainstorm as many attributes as we can that describe each alternative.
We also thought about which attributes to make each alternative more effective.
From this modified list of attributes, we brainstormed ideas that incorporate solution to identified problems
